Some Gardening Tips from a Mississauga Chiropractor
May 21st, 2009
With the new season upon us, many of my patients are busy gardening in their yards. In fact, I took the opportunity myself recently to plant some perennials of my own.
Gardening is a great way to stay active, and have fun watching the fruit of your labour. However, many people sustain injuries that could easily have been prevented with a little know-how.
It’s important that your body is warmed up prior to doing any activities including that involved in gardening. To plant and rake without the ache, it’s important to warm your body up prior to any exertion, including something as simple as walking on the spot for ten minutes. Don’t forget to lift your knees and gently swing your arms.
Remember before lifting something heavy, position yourself close to the object. Stand your feet shoulder-with apart, head up, with your feet and body pointing in the same direction.
Check the weight of what you’re lifting. Use your leg and arm muscles to smoothly and slowly lift the load.
Keep the load close to your body. Pivot with your feet- don’t twist your body while carrying the load.
Bend your knees and slowly lower the load to its intended place.
Do not lift heavy objects above your waist and avoid heavy lifting immediately after prolonged bending or kneeling.
Most importantly, get some help with the heavy and awkward loads.
